Three stories of Provisions: an exhibition in the Museum of Moscow

The Moscow Museum is calling for an exhibition dedicated to the architectural ensemble on Zubovsky Boulevard. It acquaints viewers with the ancient appearance of the Museum of Moscow, which survived three births, transformed from Provision warehouses into the Garage of the General Staff, and then into a modern exhibition space.

The exhibition is divided into three parts, from the present to the past. The starting point is the modern history of Provision warehouses, which have become one of the main museums of the capital. The first part of the exposition presents the brightest exhibition projects of the Museum of Moscow, photographs and videos telling about city projects. The second part tells about the history of the garages of the General Staff and introduces the guests to the retro cars of the Soviet era. The third zone shows the original appearance of Provision warehouses, built in 1835 to store military supplies.

Each zone combines the advantages of a multimedia exhibition with a classic archive: here you can see rare video and artifacts, and in the transitions between the zones to get acquainted with the historical events connecting the three epochs.

About a still-life is often thought of as something static, presenting photographs similar to the classic breakfasts of the Harlem school – delightful, but devoid of dynamics. Modern still life is filled with movement: milk is spilled from cups, chocolate explodes, cocoa turns into dragon, protecting marshmallows. It’s worth starting, of course, not with a dragon, but with something simpler. For example, with lemon tea, where there is not only a lemon, which is not fully affected by gravity, but also the movement of steam rising from the cup.

Equipment and props

First, we need the means for fixing lemons in the air. These are clamps, which I will discuss later, and something subtle to fix directly the lemon slice. In my case, these are long thin needles for beads. You can take toothpicks, skewers, thin needles, but the needle is most convenient. For very light objects (tea leaves or mint) acupuncture needles.

Secondly, we need items of a still life: a transparent cup, lemons, cinnamon, sugar. Mint leaves, however, will look no less successful.

Thirdly, the light source. Speed ​​of steam movement is low, and lemons will be fixedly fixed in “flight”, so the scene can be shot with both pulsed and constant light. Even windows will be enough (if you prefer natural lighting). I like controlled light, so I shoot with two flashes.

Fourth, the means for creating steam, which I will discuss below.

And, of course, not least we need a camera. I shoot on the Nikon D800 with a Nikon 105mm f / 2.8 FX AF MICRO-NIKKOR lens. Also great for, for example, professional D850 or amateur D5200. And, of course, a tripod.


A necessary thing in the economy of almost any subject photographer. If you shoot falling cups, flying cookies, soaring ink tanks and other levitation, you most likely need not only an adhesive gun, but also a good tool for fixing these items in the correct position and at the right angle. The “hand” of the reflector and the wire is beautiful, I do not argue, but do not always cope. That’s what I tried and that I liked.

Let’s look at the special clip Wimberley The Plamp II – my favorite. It consists of spherical hinges, which, firstly, well hold their weight (you can fix a small reflector, and it will not fall), and secondly, can be fine-tuned (the spoon in the frame will be exactly at the right angle).

This clamp is designed for those who take flowers, but are used by everyone. It is possible to clamp something solid, and it will be rigidly fixed, and something soft, for example, a stalk of a camomile – and it will not be remembered.

Also a good clip for Starmag Double Flexi Clamp. Invented for those who are engaged in embroidery and patchwork. There are no hinges, a special lining for soft things is also missing, the adjustment of the position is not so thin, but the weight holds well (you can attach even heavier objects), clings to the table firmly and generally pleases.

In addition, consider any clamp with a thin “flexible” tube. Do not even come near them! It is almost impossible to adjust the bending of such a tube: it straightens, falls, refuses to cooperate. Trying to fix this in the right position is like trying to straighten a wire with a memory effect, it returns to its previous state as soon as it is left alone.


The key to capturing steam is a light source. All. Yes, even a cold room and boiling water, but it goes without saying. The main thing to remember is that steam and smoke are very different things.

I’m all hands for using aromatic fragrances to get smoke on the photo – it’s cheap, and relatively safe. Smoke-machine and dry ice is not at all, and the incense can be bought in any shop with souvenirs. Problems begin when they are used to simulate steam. But steam is a fluid particle, and smoke is a particle of a solid in the air. A couple usually has a slightly larger fraction and a completely different structure. In the photo, this is noticeable.

If you want to remove steam over a cup of tea, it is best to take a cup with a real hot drink and light it with a backlight (just put the camera in front of the window if you shoot with natural light), it will be very beautiful. If your model is not so easily boiled with water, a steamer for clothes or a stack of wet cotton pads heated in a microwave oven can go into action. But in most cases you will have enough of the usual boiling water.


So, we have sorted out the formalities, we can get down to business!

Gather an uncomplicated composition with a tea cup as the center of interest. Leave plenty of room at the top of the picture – for steam and levitation. Cut the lemon into segments, each pierce with a long thin needle or skewer. Fix this design in the air using the clamps I mentioned above, or handy items like a ruler, a pile of books and a paint tape. In the photo it can be seen that the needles are not so much fixed by the clips on the holders themselves as they are glued to them with a paint tape – so it was easier to find the right angle. First fix the heavy objects (lemon slices), and then light (leaves of mint or tea).

You can use any familiar light scheme where one condition is met: one of the light sources should illuminate the pairs from behind. So it will be clearly visible in the picture and even slightly glow.

In my case, the light scheme looks like this:

Drawing light. The flash in the strip box is just behind the stage. Beats tea and lemons. I like this effect on transparent objects: they start to glow and it turns out very nicely.

  • Filling light. You can put a reflector, but with a flash behind a large diffuser I like more. It highlights the shadows, makes the tea leaves and the anise star on the left visible.

  • Black flag. The third photo shows both flashes together. Plus, I put a small black flag (A6 sheet of cardboard) to close the strip of horizontal background behind an empty cup – I like it when the horizontal border in the frame is not visible.

    Shooting and processing

    Do not forget to make an “empty” shot, where the composition is already there, and there are no lemons and holders yet – so it will be easier to remove the last ones. Check to see if everything is going well, move the camera to the burst mode, add the steam in the way that you like most and take a few pictures. Settings, of course, are selected depending on your light source and the atmosphere that you want to transfer. My EXIF ​​looks like this: ƒ / 10, 1 / 100s, ISO 160.

    Now you need a little puzzle over the picture. Processing here is minimal, because we did everything on the site. Take pictures in RAW. This shooting in Nikon cameras allows you to flexibly adjust the color and save details in the shadows. Convert the file from RAW, increasing the saturation of the blue color, so that the steam looks more contrasting next to the lemon slices. Open the most successful frame from the series and the “empty” frame in Photoshop, put an “empty” frame on top of a separate layer and use the layer mask (Layer Mask) and a soft brush just paint everything that should not be visible. Zapehshire visible parts of needles in lemons and leaves. I needed to add a little more shine to the frame: make the color of the tea warmer, remove the specks, slightly lighten the tea leaves in the foreground. TA-dah!

    Combining levitation with dynamic movement (steam, pouring out flour or spices, coffee, etc.) is a very effective technique that looks more amusing than cups just hanging in the air. Try to take a still life with other fruits, cookies or even ice cream. Successful experiments!

    So, spring is on the nose. The flowering season is just around the corner. And that means that for those who suffer from allergic rhinitis, bronchial asthma and allergic conjunctivitis, the season of torment will begin. So, what can we do?

    First, we need to know that there is a “flowering map”. If you know what exactly you have an allergic reaction, you need to keep track of such “flowering maps” and understand when the flowering of the plant that you are allergic to begins – at what time. There is a standard (basic), yearly non-updating map, which roughly indicates when a particular plant blooms – in what month. But now there is the opportunity to more accurately know when exactly in your region starts to bloom this or that plant. This can be determined by navigating a flowering map for your region. Unfortunately, they are not always accurate. This, too, must be borne in mind.

    So, what you need to take an allergy sufferer before the flowering season? First, start a basic therapy, without waiting until allergy manifestations begin. You should start taking antihistamines. It is desirable that these are second-generation drugs that do not cause drowsiness and other serious side effects. Some people may be recommended taking antileukotriene drugs based on Montelukast (Latin Montelukastum). Perhaps your doctor has told you about it. Asthmatics may be recommended to increase the level of inhaled basal therapy, but this should also be discussed with your health care provider.

    Then, it is important to understand that there is such a thing as “cross-allergy”. And some cereals can give a cross reaction to a number of foods. It is necessary to find out which cross product gives an allergic reaction to your allergen and exclude these products during the flowering period from the diet, so as not to increase the allergic reaction. It used to be that during the period of exacerbation of pollinosis (seasonal allergic rhinoconjunctivitis), planned vaccines should be avoided. Now more and more specialists are inclined to the point of view that one should not postpone planned vaccinations in this period. Nevertheless, after vaccination it is necessary to be under the supervision of a doctor for at least half an hour in order to exclude anaphylactic reactions. By the way, this applies not only to allergies, but also to children who do not suffer from allergies.

    Allergy sufferers can also use any salt solutions, apply them to the nasal mucosa in order to reduce the amount of pollen entering the nose. This can be done before leaving the house in order to protect the mucosa, and on returning home in order to clean the nasal mucosa. It is also necessary to take a shower regularly in order to wash allergens off the skin surface. You can also install in the apartment filters for cleaning air – stationary or mobile. There are stationary, which are built into the wall of your apartment. In this case, for the flowering period, you should close the windows and use these filters. In addition, allergic people during intensive flowering should avoid prolonged outdoor activities, especially in those places where trees bloom (carriers / spreaders of allergens). In severe cases, it may be recommended to leave for the flowering period to another region where this plant does not blossom.

    If the edema has already begun, then it is necessary to wash the saline solution with mucous membrane and take an antihistamine. It is also recommended that allergy sufferers use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory hormonal sprays, which are applied to the mucous membrane. However, it is important to understand that similar drugs – prolonged (delayed) action. They must be taken in advance and sufficiently large courses. Do not be afraid of side effects! As a rule, local application of hormones is not dangerous. They are not absorbed into the blood and have a minimal amount of side effects – especially if we use them only for the flowering period.

    There is also an allergen-specific immune therapy (ASIT). Many of you have heard of it. But, unfortunately, now – namely in the spring, – it’s too late to hold it. It should be carried out in advance, in the autumn-winter period. Therapy is prescribed to children, starting from age 5, and is quite effective. Please do not self-medicate! Do not use drugs that have an unknown composition! The use of homeopathic, herbal preparations with unknown composition can strengthen already existing allergic reactions or cause the development of allergic reactions in those people who have not had them before. Take care of children!

    – A surprising place – Coffeemania next to Alma Mater – native conservatory. There I met Konstantin Ishkhanov, the President of the European Foundation for the Support of Culture, and fortunately, I had a date when I could play, and then everything developed according to a wonderful scenario – 145 years to Sergei Vasilyevich Rakhmaninov. We stopped at the Rhapsody on the theme of Paganini …

    – Does your idea of ​​this brilliant work change with the years?

    – I do not really believe that a pianist can realize the difference in his game: you used to play like that before, but now it’s different. When a person grows up, grows up, in general, he does not always notice how it changes. But in fact, it changes very much! But do not think about it specifically. Everything should be natural, – also naturally, as the tree’s crown grows and grows, as the river bed changes over time …

    The first time I played rhapsody in 1996 in Russia, then after a while – already in London … The view of this work, of course, changed, because I played it with so many orchestras – with all the famous Russian bands, with many American , with the orchestra of the Berlin Philharmonic. Today I will be very curious with the Armenian Symphony Orchestra to play it!

    – Being on stage, in the process of execution, how do you feel time?
